Top Players and Roles

Positions on the Pitch

Each team consists of 11 players that play in the following positions: goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. Each position is important, and it is commonly thought that some of the best players in the world for each position play in the Premier League, so there is plenty of exciting football to watch. A defender can be a centerback or a fullback. Centerbacks mark the opposing attackers, while fullbacks can either support the defense and help moving the ball forward. This happens a lot in the Premier League. Midfielders link up with the attackers to create attacking chances. Some of the most exciting attacking players also play in the Premier League.

What Makes a Player Stand Out

Great players read the game fast. They have excellent awareness of where each player is on the field. Fitness is key to playing in this league, as the intensity of play is rarely matched by other leagues in the world, and each player needs to have consistent workrate for the entire 90 minutes of play. Set pieces have also become an important aspect of the games in the Premier League, so a player's ability to create chances when the ball is stationary or out of play is largely important as well. Every role counts, and good teams blend many skills.
